Something is eathing our Jerusulem artichokes

I don't think it is deer, as my husband has made our garden into a fortress complete with 8 ft. fences and barbed wire on top. The deer are pretty discouraged about it. But....it could be rabbits. Whatever it is, they are coming every night and eating the heck out of them, and only them. Nothing else is getting munched. Short of fencing just this section with chicken wire against rabbits, are there any suggestions? DH is going to spray with a cayanne pepper mixture to see if that helps. Thanks
