This isn't quite the same thing, but I'm reading Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen. Dinesen went to Kenya in 1913 to run a coffee plantation. The book is about her impressions of the country and her interactions with the natives and with a white big game hunter (Dinesen isn't as explicit about this relationship as Meryl Streep and Robert Redford are in the movie version).
Dinesen observed everything that went on around her, thought about it, and set it all down. Her prose is really lovely.
