There has been talk here in Ontario of new "smart meters" - which allow the electricity provider to know loads, the times those loads are used etc. One interesting aspect is that the price of electricity is supposed to go down for those off-peak demand times, such as in the middle of the night - so if you were to set your washer, dryer, whatever on a timer, you could save a bit of coin. I'd also assume that rates will increase for those peak demand times.
