Waste?

I roasted a while chicken for dinner a couple of nights ago. Was cleaning out the fridge the next day and was going to dump the bones/left over meat away.

I could not do it!

I had just got back from grocery shopping and I remember seeing the prices for stock and couldnt bring myself to pitch it! It takes so little effort to make and can that I actually felt guilty even thinking about it lol!

What is happening to me??? The frugal bug bit again I think.

Bet you got some great stock out of it. I seldom bother with chicken bones, but I do love a big old pot of turkey carcass.

I'm so with you! And to me, it's not a frugal thing but a quality thing. The quality and flavor of home made stock is so superior to that which comes out of a can or carton! I put up my own too. There's always some in a jar or the freezer around here.

You did the right thing! I buy chickens JUST to make stock. I have to almost grudgingly eat the meat just to justify buying the chicken!

Lol! I love chicken so I dont mind buying them...after I am done making the stock I pour it thru the strainer and guess who comes runnin? Yep..the dog! He knows that he gets all the meat I can pick off of the carcas for him. He also knows that he wont get it until its cool enough to eat. But he will stay in that kitchen and wait for me to put it in his bowl. Smart doggie!

Yep yep! The store brands are so salty to me that I cant use them. I have lots of chicken and turkey stock. I have never made beef stock though. I need to look that up on how to do it. I would assume its like the poultry I make. Off to find out!

I'm just like you. And when I clean out the fridge, I give all the leftovers to the critters to eat. I don't like to waste things.
Yesterday I peeled several butternut squashes and canned them. I tossed the peeling into the garbage because it was cold, and I didn't want to take them outside. Then I felt guilty about doing that. My husband tells me I am cheap, and he is right. That frugal bug goes around here too.

I make all my own stock. Beef and Chicken.
The stuff at the store tastes like sea water.

It is a good habit to get into, using bones for stock, frugal and healthy. I tried making my own beef stock a few months ago, and it came out better than I expected. I make a bunch of soups so I'm always using up my stock. I buy whole chickens on sale, cook them, can what we don't eat for dinner and then make stock. I wish I could make enough to get ahead of the demand. lol

I like to make stock with chicken backs. If the DW is not around, I'll make a big pot of stock with chicken feed. She loves it, but has no idea (I don't tell her) it's from chicken feet.
