Scouting out food dehydrators

Wal-mart has some dehydrators in the $45. to $55. range.

In that price range what would you suggest I look for?
I live in an area of the country that gets very humid in the summer...if that should be part of the criteria.

I won't do massive amounts of drying...mostly herbs, fruits, onions, celery, carrots, apples.

Would appreciate your comments.

The ones I've seen at walmart didn't have a temp control or fan.

In your price range is the Nesco FD75. I have one and it's great for small batches. I highly recommend getting clean-a-screens for them - or make something up.

For light to moderate use I agree that Nesco is the preferred brand and the one linked by kkbinco gets good reviews. Avoid the Ronco dehydrators. You need a fan and at least some temperature control and the ones with the fans on top seem to work faster than the ones with the fans on the bottom. And for doing herbs you will want extra screens.

I also think for the money the American Harvest/Nesco is the way to go. Good value for the money.

I have seen dehydrators at the local resale and thrift stores fairly often if you are looking for a bargain and to get started.
