reusable canning lids?

Just spotted some today in my "Countryside" mag. I am intriged. Anyone here ever use them? This source has a website...Tattler...checked out pricing, $20.95 for 3 dozen regular lids and gaskets. A little pricy, but reusable!

Tell me what you think of reusable canning lids...Thanks!
Anna

Hi Anna - there are several previous discussions about them here that the forum search should pull up for you if you search 'Tattler". Here is a link to one of the longest ones: Tattler Lids are great!

Yeah I saw that in Countryside also. They sell them in the Lehmans book. I think I might get some to try out.

i just looked online at these. it said they would be replaced for free if they went bad. but i guess i am a little confused. they sell replacement rubber rings so i am wondering if these need to be replaced every year or every so often. it said these lids have been around since the 70's, how many have used these?

The rings do not need to be replaced often. More likely you lost one, damaged one, etc so you need replacements. I have about 10 dozen and no replacement rings in the house (yes, I need to order some just "in case" but it's rather low on my to-do list) I have some from the 70's I picked up "used". They were un-used but from the 70's, the rubber rings are still in great shape and I have used then many times.

I picked up a box of each size this fall at Lehman's. (small purchase to test for my own use) I haven't opened any of the jars yet, but they have a nice tight seal. I'm looking forward to replacing my supply of throw-a-ways. -hate to buy anything that gets thrown out after only one use.
