Washing Locks in Tulle

in case you missed it (like I did) here's a link to a great article regarding washing locks in tulle.

A bit putzy but you cannot argue with the amazing outcome!

Have a new fleece coming in the mail. I'm going to have to try it out.

Yea! I know several people who do this and my thoughts how I view are similar to house keeping There are better ways to spend my time, and, a clean house is a sign of a misspent life. The people I know used to sew the locks into the strips of tulle. It isn't happening here, sorry but that is a bit persnickety to me. I just don't have the time, and if i did I'd rather spend it spinning or knitting.

So call me a fiber curmudgeon, it just seems silly.

not silly at all. i just got a superfine raw merino with 15 micron. i wash it lock by lock like margaret stove in her dvd spinning for lace.
it all depends what character the yarn should have you are about to spin.
i would not spend time and do it with romney or jacob fleece or any other longwool. but the very fine fleeces really do much better when washed this way.

I felt the same way as you do, Marchwind - until I saw Margaret Stove's video. This method is obviously NOT for every fleece (or everybody) but it would bring out the BEST in a GREAT fleece - like the one susanne has.

15 microns - wow - I cannot even begin to imagine!

If you want to spin from a top, the fibers all in the same direction, this method or one similar is the only way to do it. Some of my fiber I comb before washing (much dirtier than the wool in the video), so I might as well try to keep everything lying in the same direction.

Is it Shepherd's Harvest yet?

I am not afraid of fiddly washing methods for fine fleeces.
For some of them it is really the only way to get the wool clean w/o felting and wrecking it all up.
If you spin it very fine, even a handful of locks can last all day long and that yarn is worth the work.

Oh alright, I'll conced that for a really, really fine fleece like that Merino Susanne has and not for every fleece or every person.

Susanne, you fleece sounds yummy! You will have to take pictures. What wil you make with it?
