Haggis, I'm glad the new one is doing well. She sounds like she's taking the feed real well. It was me who said you could wean her when she's eating at least two pounds a day. It's always worked for me and I've never seen one do bad by using that rule.

Good luck and I'm glad that the Grandbabies love her so much......

Jim

The Grand-Darlings really do love the "farm" as they term it. 7 year old Kaela and 3 year old Angus were over last night helping me feed and water the stock. I haven't bothered to buy a bale spear yet so I'm unrolling my round bales of hay and pitching the loose hay into a sled and draggin it to the barn manger or the round bale feeder. The Bairns love to jump on top of the load of loose hay and ride behind the tractor. Of course the return trip usually has me zipping high speed all over the field looking for the roughest path back to the round bales. I don't know which trip they like best, but they scream bloody murder both ways.

Isn't this what makes our lives worthwhile? My six year old grandson is autistic and sometimes has his own focus on reality but he loves to help PaPa with the milking. He is totaly enthralled with the whole process.

I do wonder at times though, out of my six children three are grown and married and I only have one grandchild..... They need to step up the pace a bit I think

Did you ever get the results form your Devon that aborted?

Jim

My Grand-Darlings call me PaPa.

What I have discovered is that there are no vets in this area who do blood tests. The vets (all small animal vets around here) who who would discuss it said that it is very unlikely to be anything more than bad luck.

The lady who sold me the herd said that all of the cows she sold as bred produced calves when they were supposed to; except mine of course. There was however a single cow that had not settled among those she sold, and that cow had a uterine infection that prevented her from becoming pregnant.

I think the old cow is headed for the freezer anyway. She's 11 years old; coming on 12. It will take 3 months before she will come into heat again, and then another 9 months getting a calf. By this time she will be old old. It's pretty sure that she is freezer stuff unless someone came along wanting to buy her as is.
