What do you think of her

Have not been very good a picking out a winner so what do you think of this girl 2 years old about 1000lbs. They want $2000 for her. Exposed 90 days to a charlolais bull.

Athena 12/13/14 02:31 AM

No. What breeds is she supposed to be? For a two-year-old she looks severely undergrown.

Was told angus. I wasn't sure about the hind legs/hips doesn't look right to me.

Gravytrain 12/13/14 05:07 AM

Fairly nice and long, but really scrawny. She doesn't look to have the hips to deliver a charolais calf. IMO they are selling her for a reason.

Ok thanks for the replies I think I'll pass on this one.

idigbeets 12/13/14 06:21 AM

Small all the way around... you want a broader front end (larger lungs, heart etc), and the hips are way too small for a good breeder...

DaleK 12/13/14 07:03 AM

Looks AngusXJerseyish to me. Should have been bred long ago but still looks small to breed.

Allen W 12/13/14 07:14 AM

charlolais bull run away don't walk

Went the route of getting cows off others farms instead of sale barn and got taken on a jersey cross. Guy told me it was red angus x limousine. I knew better but got taken anyway.

MO_cows 12/13/14 11:42 AM

keep looking.

postroad 12/13/14 08:36 PM

Why is her butt so far up in the air? My Dexters have a calf at two years old.

So are all breeds...

I would pass on this cow. She sure doesn't looks like she is bred and even if she is, she's bred to wrong bull that can end her life. If she is really an Angus then she's sorriest looking one I ever seen in my whole life. Maybe if they knock $1,000 off the price then I'll probably take her.

Are you indicating that this heifer has a normal topline?

No. All breeds calved at 2 years old. What's up with "My dexters has a calf at two years old" statement?

I thought you were indicating that her topline was normal for all breeds. The post indicated that this animal was two years old and bred but never had a calf. I had just been wondering aloud why she hadn't had a calf already or at least wasn't heavily pregnant. My Dexter cattle have had their first calf at or around two years of age.

Regardless of breed, not everyone chooses to time the breeding of their heifers so that they calve at 2 years old. Some choose to wait longer because they believe that it is better for the heifer (even one in perfect condition for her age) to grow more before breeding. This animal, I wouldn't have bred at 15 months, and I'd lay even odds as to whether or not she was even cycling at that age.

postroad 12/14/14 11:35 AM

My grandparents had a small herd of Holsteins for shipping cream. They also waited well past two years of age before breeding. Man those cows were big compared to me. Of course they deliberately waited because they wanted a huge cow for large volumes of milk. They used the skim milk for fattening hogs and feeding the calves. Grandma also soaked day old bread in the milk for the calves.

The picture is terrible, you can't judge her top line or much else very well from how she is positioned.

postroad 12/14/14 05:09 PM

I almost thought it had been photoshoped. Head looks out of proportion to body. doesn't look feminine in the face neither. Never seen a swayback to that extent.
Probably looks nicer in person. Good shiny coat.

gander801 12/16/14 09:32 PM

Thanks for the replies. I'm still looking liking all the advice.

sassafras manor 12/17/14 10:46 AM

Not to mention she sure doesn't look to be 1000 lbs. Judging by the size of her feet in relation to the tube gates she may be more like 700-750lbs and doesn't have enough girth to be 1000 lbs.

agmantoo 12/17/14 12:57 PM

Most animals that have this appearance seem to be sold off craigslist! At the asking price plus a couple hundred you should be able to find a proven bred beef breed that is several months along. This animal IMO is not worth any more than what she would bring at the sale barn with some dockage for body condition and breeding.

pfettig77 12/18/14 01:40 PM

So are craigslist buys generally not a good idea?

Allen W 12/18/14 07:54 PM

pfettig77

It's going to depend a lot on your skill level at judging animals and people also. I've seen some good livestock and I've seen some not so good animals listed.

MO_cows 12/19/14 07:09 AM

Probably still better off with craigslist than the auction. At least you get to see where they came from and ask questions when you respond to an ad. When you go to the auction you just have to evaluate on what you see in the ring.

LittleRedHen 12/19/14 08:23 AM

shes standing a little funny but I agree that she looks to be crossed with Jersey

CowPoke 01/10/15 11:28 PM

Her stance doesnt allow me to ascertain her proportions.Even My healthy heavy bred cows look funny when standing like this. I dont like her bully-ish head but I dont think the pic does her any justice. My Younger Angus heifers have similar slants up their belly thru their hips and Im a hobby farmer who feeds well just for a tax break... My cows look good.. Get a better pic... But, if I were making a deal just from a pic, Id not pay that-- Id have to have laid eyes on her....

Lady89 01/11/15 01:28 AM

breed to a charlolais bull, she is going to need help having that calf!
but i cant tell how good or bad she is from this pic. you need to get one of her from behind and one of her side strait on not turned at an angle

gander801 01/11/15 05:15 PM

Thanks for the replies. I passed on this one. That is the only pic I had of her. Did not make the trip to see in person

With just the picture to go on, I think you made the right decision.
