Howdy neighbor! If it was the big dairy in Freeman, that's where my Sunny came from. She's an excellent cow.

I was just curious how they would compare in the current market. Two are already spoken for. Looking for a buyer on the third.

$3-$3.5 hanging weight, buyer pays processing. Check CL.
$1.25 live. Check Kingsville or Mo-Kan in Pasaic. (What do you folks have on that side? I should check for my own benefit.)

Using a conservative 50% hanging vs. live rate, I think you'll do quite a bit bit better selling as slaughtered, but with considerably more marketing and handling work. If they were hornless, black hided Jersey X, I would definitely take them to the barn and get the $$$ in this market.

I don't keep up with the livestock market prices much, but I went to a feeder steer and heifer sale yesterday for preconditioned fall 2013 calves. Most were about 700#, sold in lots of about 50. I took note of some of the prices: $2.41/lb. and $2.60/lb. I don't know the highest price, but I thought that was a pretty good payday for those who sold.

So we took the horned steer to the butcher last week. His hang wt was 456, so live should have been 760ish. With the price of beef and grass being free, we decided to keep the other two until next summer. Let them plump up on the rich June grass.DSC00711.jpg
