Wow this is a rough one to read. I been staying off HT for sometime. I might poke on once in awhile. But wish I would have seen this one sooner to comment on.
First off signs of johnes. Green liquid bubble crap. Very bad smell. Rapid weight lose, rough hair coat. Sometimes you will see swelling under the jaw. Common thing to be done in the dairy industry is to ship said cow to slaughter with out any test or vet inspection. One way to clear a herd of this is shipping any suspected cattle.
Now to the drastic awakening you folks stepped into. First off get the cows on a worming debugging regiment if not already. Parasite overload will kill the fast to. Glen what knowledge you can from the other partners. Ask questions. Then look around or go for a drive. Your bound to find other cattle owners around you. Stop and visit them. Might run into a old timer over flowing with helpful info. Sometimes some of that live with cattle everyday. Tend to misunderstand newcomers to this life style. We need to step back and be helpful what ever way we can.
