We had our first calf yesterday (15 degrees and 3 inches of snow on the ground). A dexter bull calf. We are proud of him we have worked almost 2 seasons getting ready, we had a set back with our first breeeding bull. We are waiting on 2 more calves so I hope to share them with you also. This little guy too

Dry and fluffy, he looks like he made out well despite the weather.

Cute baby...congratulations!

Gosh, he looks nice and square for such a new baby. Handsome fellow! Do you think he will lighten to dun? He appears too light to stay black, though his hooves are real dark. I am not up on Dexter baby colors for how they finish as older animals.

Hope the next couple calves deliver smoothly and mother up well.

Congratulations and best of luck on your other calves. He's a good looking boy. Who are the parents? Registered?

solsikkefarms 02/07/14 03:03 PM

He's a stocky looking little bull. Here's hoping you have many more.

Update......She is a heifer........

Sorry wife got excited when she found her and texted me the pic....but she is growning fast and looking well. Still waiting on our other two to calf.....I'm hoping they got pregnant.

Parents are not papered, just your average dexter beef cow. When looking close at she he looks like a Hersheys chocolate color. Thank you all

even better

2nd Irish dexter heifer calf arrived sunday morning. her first calf also and kicked every time calf tried to suckle. We ended up bottle feeding colostrum and kept working to let her calf suckle which we finally did. Calf is 36 hours old in pics. We are expecting 1 more calf from our oldest cow, shes 3-3 1/2 and calved once.

Oh My That is Cute!

G. Seddon 03/03/14 05:29 PM

Looks like you have a nice spot for them to figure things out without interference from nasty weather and other cows. Good to see!

M88A1 03/04/14 06:54 AM

My biggest project so far was a hay shed...12x48, basically 4 12 foot stalls, we use hay for 2 and the cows have 2.

Nice looking calves, all of them. With the dun cow, I guess those odd brown calves will be dun later. It is a pretty brown, just an odd shade.

Is the last photo with calf and bottle, a calf who did not "mother up"? I had not heard of that with any Dexter cows, they are all bragged up for being such GOOD moms.

Those tiny calves are irrisistable! You want to just hug them!!

Madyparker2014 03/04/14 03:07 PM

Super cute

M88A1 03/05/14 06:51 AM

We penned up our last cow yesterday....she had milk leaking from her udders so I'm hoping she ready to calf...

M88A1 03/21/14 11:02 AM

Well, our cow didnt deliver so she must not got breed. will update with some pics of the 2 new ones later

MO_cows 03/21/14 12:45 PM

You better get her checked. If she was leaking milk, something was going on. If there is a dead calf in there she needs help ASAP.

G. Seddon 03/21/14 01:18 PM

Ditto what MO Cows said. Do you have a large animal vet? Please get some help with this situation quickly!

WildRoots 03/21/14 02:47 PM

Agreed^ milk production doesn't happen without pregnancy
