Here's a new photo of the same steer that was featured in my "Deep Freezer" thread started on 12/31/13. What a difference a month makes. 18 days and a wake up for this old boy. Just thought I'd update for folks new to raising their own beef. Will take a few more photos during his loading on the 19th, and will also post his live weight at the slaughterhouse....Topside

This is our boy Raven born on superbowl sunday last year. He is all grass fed with all the hay he could eat the last three months and started on chaffhaye, www.chaffhaye.com, alfalfa in a bag the first of the year. He has a date with the butcher/slaughter on march 11

Thank you Topside for sharing!!! My steers are right behind yours in dates. We are looking at sending ours the first week in April.

How much weight do you think he put on in a month?

topside1 01/30/14 09:14 PM

No telling Crabby, all I can say is I'm happier than I was one month ago....Topside

CrabbyChicken 01/30/14 09:33 PM

Excited to see what your weights will be!!! How much corn do you feed at a time?

topside1 01/31/14 06:41 AM

He's just getting whole corn twice a day. A Mayfield ice cream tub full, I guess 5 pounds twice a day. The lucky part is corn is down to $5.60 per 50#....Topside

Here is our 19 month old Jersey bull. He goes to the butcher this coming monday.
He is standing next to his mother who is approx. 3 years old.
I am guessing him to be right around 1000 lbs.

The photo is from November. I should have sent him then as he has gotten more aggressive in the past we months. We have enjoyed having him, but all agree it is getting past his time to go.

Half will go in our freezer and the other half will go to a co-worker and his extended family.

Cshire, pretty bull! Let us know weights when he goes!

Topside, I just bought my cracked corn and it was .....$14.50 a bag.
Just checked at the feed store and whole corn # $16.50 a bag

bruce2288 01/31/14 04:55 PM

And right now a farmer in Nebraska could see corn for about $4.oo/bushel. 56lbs

Laura Workman 02/02/14 09:03 PM

And we're lucky to find it for $14.00 for a 50# bag.

Awnry Abe 02/02/14 09:19 PM

Wowser. That's 2x as much as here.

Topside I could pay for my fuel with the savings I made coming out your way and picking up a ton of corn. It's still going for $9.65 per 50# bag out here in OkieLand!!!:bandwagon:

Gravytrain 02/02/14 09:59 PM

$11 /100 here last I checked

ETA:

Priced it today: $10.10 /100#

CrabbyChicken 02/04/14 08:35 AM

Gosh it would be wonderful if it were $10 for 100lbs here! Thanks for the info!

I went to buy some whole corn since it was cheaper than Cracked, and the feed store guy tried to talk me out of it... like three different times. He said they can't digest it!

topside1 02/04/14 09:15 PM

The feed guy is wrong, way wrong. The insides of the seed are digested and the hull/skin drops out with the manure. Some are chewed to a pulp, but all are absorbed into the animals system. Crack corn is easier to absorb and digest simply because it's cracked into pieces. I usually feed cracked but @ $9.50 a bag and whole @ $5.60 a bag I chose whole. Even the crows won't eat those digested corn hulls, they know it's worthless....Topside

CrabbyChicken 02/04/14 09:32 PM

Thanks for validating the info Ive been reading about the whole corn feeding!

I've seen this basic theory go write over so many peoples head. If you even loose 10% of a feed value but save %40 purchasing cost it should be basic math. Especially if your in an area that produces corn and buy it direct from the farmer by the ton.
