1 Attachment(s)
went out to milk my cows and I noticed this on my jersey heifer any ideas on what could be wrong do I need to find a vet? sorry for the graphic pic hope I dont offend anyone
Looks like she may be in heat .
jeez I dont know that much about it but I have never seen them swell up like that she is 10 months old
is she acting differently ? not eating ? have you seen her come into heat before ??
I wonder if she backed into something and bruised herself. That is a lot of swelling for just a heat cycle. That purple streak looks like bruising. You might try cleaning her up and just watching.
Not heat. Possibilities are an injury (is she with a bull?) allergic reaction or infection. If the swelling isn't going down quickly you should get her checked out.
well she was in heat last week bellowing for a bull we use AI so we dont have any bulls except for one and it is only 1 month old
shes eating fine and acting normal other than holding her tail to one side
Did you use AI last week ?
no we didnt shes to young to bred at only 10 months only
I'd clean her up and watch closely for any adverse signs ,With the swelling and no adverse signs and holding tail to one side i think shes in heat . if your not sure call a vet .
well we cleaned her up and we are going to keep and eye on her I think if it dont start going down by tomorrow I will try a get a vet out here to take a look at her . I hope it just passes her Dad is one of the top jersey bulls in the states
If you have hemiroid ointment try to put that on her. Or a hydrocortisone cream. If none is available just plain table sugar will bring down the swelling.
I have seen some of my heifers rub their butts on the trees when they are in heat. Causes them to become irritated and swollen. |
well my wife came home seen it and called the vet He is on his way out here now. I told her we should just wait and see what happens first but she would not listen to me she just keep saying it looks like it would hurt like hell so I will post what the vet says is going on when he leaves hope it nothing to bad
well our vet says she got some very bad mahogany wasp stings on her ya hoo he said there was at least 3 places where she was stung so put sugar on it to help take the swelling down and said she would be fine . He checked inside of her just to make sure and said everything was normal inside. I want to thank everyone for their help and input its so nice to have a place to go to get answers when you need them
Poor girl! Getting stung on the whoohaa. I feel for her!
Also icecold witchhazel spritzed on will bring her great comfort and bring down her swelling. We humans use it around here for after we birth. I use it on my animals if I have to get invasive with their delivery.
Yea my wife seen and said thats got to hurt I calling the vet I dont care if it is 160 bucks if my ya hoo swelled up like that I would demand a doctor
Poor cow!!!! But what the heck is a mahogany wasp?
its a dark red colored wasp we have around here very nasty sting . This time of the year when its getting colder they dont fly to good so you can even find them just crawling along on the ground . Well she must have laid down on a few of them or something because she got stung pretty good he found at least 3 places where she was stung
Dunno how well it works on cows but our birthing center adds castor oil to the witch hazel and something about the oil helps the witch hazel work better/faster on the swelling. Hope she feels better soon.
swelling is compleatly gone this morning and looks normal. I am so glad it didnt cause any permanent damage with reproduction track .so all is well
Glad she is better. You have a very wise wife there!
I would agree however if I did I would never hear the end of it LOL
