I'm still learning everyday but I was lucky enough to have a few neighbors one who is 92 that have worked their cattle for many years and are way smarter than I am teach me a few things and I also was lucky to be able to buy part of his functioning and keep his 'line' going herd and learn what has worked for them in my area . You can walk right up to his biggest bull that I would guess is 1800 lbs and do anything you want but he has 27 cows in his "the bull" pasture this year and is kept pretty busy ,Also in this area the timing of calves is not so affected by weather so we have been surprised by a few dropping unexpected !One last month by an 14 year old cow who was nowhere near the bull as far as we know it must have been an imacowlet conception !

just over the news milk going to $6.00 a gallon ... Better pick up a milk cow fast !

imacowlet conception LOL !

When you load him up to take to the processor, stop by a scale (feed mill, quarry, etc) and weigh him on your way. On the way back weigh the trailer (or truck) again. May cost a few bucks, but it is a great way to be sure.

Judging by the size standing by a protein tub, and my experience with raising and selling cross bred calves over the years I would put this boy in the 635 to 640 lb range. Dairy animals look much larger and heavier than they really are and I am willing to wager this one has at least as much dairy in its background as it does a beef breed. All that airspace between those hooves and his belly doesnt weigh very much at all.

His mom and dad are registered Beefmaster. I have seen someone on here suggest that there is some jersey in the Beefmaster need but that's the only place I know the lasiters so I might ask them but I don't think he has any in him. Neighbor stopes by so I asked him and he said 850. He's nearly 80 and been at this his entire life so I'm going to go with that. If I had a trailer I'd load him up and go to the elevator and see but since I have to borrow a trailer I don't want to wear out my welcome just to weigh him.

He does have a buddy that got feed at weaning and is bigger that I might butcher instead. He was supposed to go to a neighbor to butcher but another neighbor had a cow that broke her leg and he bought her to butcher so he doesn't want him anymore. We left the pictured steer in with mom instead of weaning because we wanted him to be grass fed until we finished him so now I'm just going to be finishing him longer.

I'd intended to leave him with mom longer before finishing but while she wouldn't let him nurse and had weaned him herself he got smart and would go nurse off of another mom while her calf was nursing. The calves on the heifers were having a hard time nursing because if him and I had to seperated him. I thought he was heavier then he is and wouldn't have to grain him so long but that's proven wrong.

Forgot to take any pictures but he was marbled pretty well not as much as some
Steaks I've had but more then most. The burgers and steaks we've had so far have tasted outstanding. At this point I'm very happy.
