We bought a set-up, but had to build our own room and put everything together. We couldn't afford the completely ready-made set-up. It is pretty simple. If I only had a couple cows to feed or a few goats, I think I could cobble something together on my own. But for this many cows, we needed a bigger set-up. Its still a work in progress, but after its a little more complete, I will try to post pictures to give you some idea.

Can't remember the name of the company that sold us the system. We did buy a system, but had to build it and build a growing room. Still very much a work in progress, or I'd post more pics. I'll try to get the name again and post it.

So far every calf (three bulls, and the heifer) has been black with at least a big white spot on one side. The heifer is the only one whos belt ran all the way around. Two bulls had belts that stopped at the backbone and the latest had just a big white patch on one side.
Two cows were pure Jersey with no white at all. One cow was half beef, with a bit of white. And the dam of the heifer pictured is 1/4 milking shorthorn, 3/4 Jersey. No white on her.
How about the size of your Dutch Belted calves?? Have been surprised at the size of these calves, they are big!

I think because we have only had most of these cows for a short time(under two years), and a lot of changes have taken place during that time, their isn't really a herd boss at this point. Several of the 6-9 year old group are top dogs, but no one cow is boss. The only one they all defer to at this point is Ace, the big bull!

It is really beautiful here. Only a teeny-weeny piece of it can I call "mine". It belongs to my sister and brother-in-law.....they love it.

My pure belts have been fairly good size calves, 85-100lbs. Jersey crosses I'd say about 75lbs.

Cool

Brings back childhood memories - eternal summer time on the farm. Long walks into the back forty, wading in the creek and catching crawdads. Thanks for the pictures.
By the way, what ever happened to the Jersey's that had horns? When I was growing up - lo, those long years ago - it seemed there were a LOT of Jerseys and they were smaller and all had horns. Now, most look like the Brown Swiss instead of Jerseys.

How many are you milking? I am milking 120 Holsteins, with 4 jerseys( they are my wife's) she has had them since she was young, do you have any problems with your young calves with IBR or hemorrhagic bowel? we have a hard time with the young jerseys but not with the holsteins. any suggestions
