Okay so I talked to her previous owner and Mable is 15 years old.

Isn't that pretty old for a cow? Also, she hasn't had any vaccines, wormers, etc in 16 months. The tag on her ear says 81 (not sure what it means if anything?)

Our vet is on vacation right now and won't be back until Monday so she won't be checked out until next week. She is doing good so far though, I've been peeling more mud off and you can see a small difference (I'll post pics tomorrow.) I was pulling mud off her udders and she tried kicking me so I suspect I pulled the hair out with it.

I was looking at pictures of brown swiss (and other dairy cows) and I noticed all their udders were bright pink, really full and lots of veins sticking out. Hers is wrinkled and hairy... Do I have to shave the hair off or is she okay for now with it?

Well she looks pretty good for 15.
And yeah, that is definitely getting into senior years age-wise.

Her udder is shrunken and hairy because she is dry and has been for a while.
You will see it plump out and get shiny and pink when there is milk in it, before her calf comes.
It is an amazing transformation, like blowing up a balloon.

All the mud will eventually fall off her when she sheds out her winter coat,
so you dont really need to fixate on it too much.

If she ends up not being worth the trouble to hand milk, you could probably use her to raise calves for you.

Mabel is a good name for a cow too.

She's a pet don't plan on getting much milk and don't plan on getting another calf from her

The bag looks pretty bad to me for a swiss and she only has 3 that will milk out of and Idought they used the stuff needed when she was dried off

if it were me id get the calf from her and leave it on her for 2-3 months and then hamburger her if she is that old she is gonna be really a problem and cost more to feed than you will ever get back but that's up to you if you want to keep her as a pet till she passes or get some food out of her

But have the vet come out asap and tell you what they think about her its harder to tell online from pics than in person

If it were me, with her age and history, after she calves I'd have her A.I.'d with Brown Swiss semen. Hopefully, you'll get a heifer that you can milk in a couple of years, without a high SCC.

I haven't really been expecting much from her. I have been thinking about getting her AI'd with another brown swiss and get one more off her before she really starts to go down hill. Her prev. owner told me she is a good momma, has had 9 calves + she has nursed and adopted 4 others.

Is sexed semen mean the resulting calf is more likely to be a certain sex? I found a brown swiss bull that has sexed female semen. While it is still months out I always like to plan ahead.

Sexed semen gives you an 80% chance of getting a heifer. If you find a good tech, have him use two straws. The bull puts a lot more volume in there.

I'd get some kelp, loose mineral, and put apple cider vinegar on her feed. You might swing by the farm store and pick up some tubes of CMP for when she calves. It's cheap, and if she goes down, you'll need it RIGHT THEN.
