I've always heard that, pink eye was why we quit raising Herefords 20 years ago. I love Herefords but everyone knows about those problems. Just left my in laws so I asked about prolapse he said not more then maybe 10 in his 40years with the breed. He has about 300 cows.

Phone died... I seriously doubt the ten number was an exact count, but rather an admission that prolapse isn't a problem or concern for him. I really only posted the pic to figure out how to do it, not to start a discussion on beefmasters. In my short time with the breed I have been very happy with them. As was brought up earlier the feedlot hasn't traditionally been an area they excell at, and in my opinion their biggest weakness. It's also not an area they were breed for, and why I believe the breed wants to make a name for its self in the grass fed market. They aren't for everyone but I'm happy with mine.

1400 lbs on up.....the cow of the future will be probably 1000 to 1200 lb. IMO.
not to discourage you if you like them them take em and run with them. a live calf is better than a dead one no matter what the breed. You will not have to pull a calf....that was what we got into them for. It seems we were pulling calves from our angus cows all winter long, but this was 20 years ago.
All of ours were mostly crossbred with angus, but they were wild as a buck deer, they would stand at a distance and look at you just like a deer does. Some you never could get in to work them. Don't know about purebred stock. they may be more docile.
I still have a few that are half beefmaster and several that are 1/4 bred and they do like the pond. Another problem I have is I don't think they do as well on fescue as other breeds like angus or charolais.
A side note about the hereford... a neighbor told me a while back that they have bred the pinkeye problem out of the hereford breed, something about a darker eye?

That's funny what you say about your angus cross being wild. About half the people I've talked with say it's the best cross, the other half say they are crazy. The full bred ones I have are the most dosicle I've ever been around, but alot is in how any cow is handled.

I was interested in what you'd say was to big, your comments echoed what I was told by some of the higher ups in the BBU. Mine have done well on fescue only one, I only have 20, lost condition this summer. She had foot rot just prior to calving and didn't move much to graze. Her calf has done well despite her losing some condition. I did give them alittle over 2 lbs of grain a day as a supplement, but stopped that now that comiditties have gotten so high.

I know some Herefords have red around the eyes and aren't supposed to have the eye problems, but I don't know if that's what your referring to or not.
