Cheryl if you know rain is coming I'd mow...Stockpiling works great if you rotational graze and you have enough livestock. The mower clippings rot and improve your soil for the next seasons growth. Why mow it all mow half, Topside

Lucky for our area of the country there has been plenty of rain this season a boon for the grass and hay it may be a good time to to get a few head of cattle if you can get a bargan on em and have the extra forage to over winter them .the pricees should be higher next spring to resale.

Topside, how high do you mow? I mowed quite high over the summer when it was really dry -- as high as 8" to 10" -- just to knock the tops off of the weeds and prevent seed heads. When temperature is cooler and we have good rain, I mow shorter, 4" to 5" or so.

i've done the same thing this year, however, i would caution you not to mow too low even with plenty of rain...... you want to leave lots of leaf area for photosynthesis to occur so you don't deplete your root reserves.

TonyB, I only mow when I know good amounts of rain are heading my way. This year we went 80 days without a drop, so obviously no mowing then. Yes I mow short three times a year about 4 inch left, almost like lawn mowing height. I gets amazingly thick providing moisture is available....Topside
