We always use regular bob wire to electify the cattle pastures, works great, it even keeps the bulls seperated. Takes only two strands.

I bet your wife will really like the calf. They are alot cuter and more fun than pigs. IMO You might want to consider getting a heifer and a steer, or maybe a cow/calf combo. The first cow I ever got was a young angus heifer. I planned to raise her for beef. Needless to say I fell for her. She lived to a ripe old age but she gave us some beautiful calves along the way. Her name was Rosie.
