If you have friends with more acreage, did you think about talking to them about boarding your cattle there and in return they get a share of the meat? That to me would be a much better compromise, besides allowing the cattle to live happier healthier lives you don't have to worry about your neighbors being upset about the smell, flies and noise. Besides from what I hear grass grown and grain finished make really good meat.
