thanks for all the good vibes everyone, let me tell you it was a big relief! and she is an A2/A2!! I feel like I hit the milk cow lottery! It makes it easier to defend to my husband my driving around with a sick cow with an IV in the back of my HUMVEE (happy with me, he was not!!) when I had to go on business travel!! He still hasn't forgiven me for that!

milk cow

I am wondering if anyone can tell me if a milk cow will give us enough milk for a family with 7 kids. Also breed suggestions. What Can I use extra milk for if one produces enough milk for my tribe. We can easliy go through 5-7 gals a week.

I am a newby to this, but I think it may depend on the breed (seems like the amount of milk varies a ton, from eight to twenty or so gallons a day from what I have read, I think) and if you leave a calf on the cow? I've a family of four with my two kids being adults so I will likely leave the calf on Annabelle for our needs; you have a much bigger nest!! super smart folks on this blog, you might want to post this question as a new thread. All I can say is, watch out for freemartins that was my biggest nightmare so far....most folks will probably say you would be smarter to buy an adult cow already milking then do what I did (and thereby avoiding the entire FM question), I am a hobby farmer who enjoys the journey as much as the destination but am not by any means practical!! Sounds like with the size of your family a milk cow would be a great idea, but again I am not that experienced.
