1/2 Holstein 1/2 Hereford 2 yr old heifer for sale
We are facing the worst drought in over 50 years. Due to this, I am downsizing the cattle herd some. If not for the extreme drought, I'd be keeping this heifer as a future family milk cow.
I have had her since she was 2 weeks old. She is gentle, but not halter broke. Exposed to an angus bull 2 months ago, not sure if she bred or not. Gorgeous black and white coloring. Healthy, current on de-worming and vaccines. Asking $700, negotiable to perfect home. I hate to have to sell her, but there is NO grass in the pasture and hay is hard to find. Will post a photo of her later tonight. |
Stop right there!
This heifer is worth at least $1200. |
Tell me where to go to get $1200 for her and I will get her there.
I really don't want to take her to an auction here because this is beef cattle country and people knock dairy cows at auction. If I sell her through the auction she will undoubtedly go to slaughter. She is a lovely heifer. The ONLY reason I'm selling her is the lack of grass and hay in our part of the country. |
Try posting an add in CL some family is probaly looking for a milk cow for there family, if we were closer Id offer to buy her or even trade hay for her.
|
I did post an ad for her on Craigslist about 2 weeks ago. Got no response at all.
Her she is. Her name is Celestial Blessing. We call her Celeste for short :) http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/...esesean024.jpg |
Oh she's beautiful! You are just too far away, and I'm too poor....
|
She looks wonderful, we have to much rain here, I`ll send ya down a truck full. Very nice looking cow, try and find a way to keep her. We had a drought here in 88 and guys were cutting down trees to feed their cows, maybe not the best food but better than nothing. Cows can eat alot of differant things, maybe you need to sit back and think outside the box of what you do have to feed your cow. > Thanks Marc
|
If you could confirm her pregnancy status you might get more response to your CL ad. Anyone buying her as a family milk cow would want to know she is bred and they only have a set time they will be feeding her for no return. Wonder where the Hereford genes went, she doesn't look Hereford influenced at all!
|
She sure is pretty. In CO, gently family cows are few and far between. Her price would start at around 1200, 1500 if she was preg checked and confirmed. I wish I had the $$ and pasture, we are having our own drought problems and I'm facing the same situation, someone has to be sold. It stinks.
|
She's beautiful. I hope you find a good home for her AND that y'all get out from under that drought soon.

Here's another photo that shows her face from the front: http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/...esesean016.jpg |
geeze that is cheap.
She is a very nice looking cow. Hope you can find her a great home. I am way to far away...too bad too. |
I hope you find a home for her. We are in East Texas and feeding hay. It stinks. Plus it is so darn hot!! I wish I could take her but I have 2 in milk now, plus my beef cows. Maybe it will rain Tues.
|
I'm hoping that things work out so that I can keep her. We have about a 40% chance of rain on Tues/Wed.....holding my breath!

Farmergirl, she's what we call a Black White Face or BWF for short - usually Hereford over Friesian from a dairy farm where the Hereford has been used as a clean up bull. I just wish I could see some pigmentation around those eyes though.
That aside, they make for good cows although they often throw the Hereford udder - large with lower back teats than front. They throw good calves and if she's gone to an Angus, the progeny should be very nice. I have one BWF in my herd (she's nearly 15) and her calves to an Angus are to die for. My neighbour has 6 BWF and she made $625 each for her weaned calves out of my Angus bull. Drought is horrible and a constant worry and I can see you are already in what we call "green drought" - grass but no growth at all. However, she looks to be in very good condition all things considered and I'm thinking along the lines of Marc in looking outside the square with what you can feed her. Willow, PKE, molassas, the long acre, hay, mangroves if your near the sea (I didn't look to see where you were - probably nowhere near the sea;)) but I think she's worth trying to hang on to even if she does drop in condition. Cheers, Ronnie |
I have decided to keep her and instead sell the full Hereford 4 year old cow I have. I had hemmed and hawed over selling the full Hereford awhile back. She is very gentle, and of course has a name, so selling her will be hard. But she is the type of cow that does well at our local beef auction. I know some of the guys who work at the auction, and I'll be sure to tell them that the only reason I'm selling her is because I have no grass in the pasture for her. If they know going in to the sale that it's just one cow from a small local farmer, they try to encourage people other than the packers to buy her.
I HATE having to sell any of them, but hard times forces hard decisions. I just hope I get some decent money for the Hereford at the auction on Wednesday. If I don't, it'll make the decision to sell her that much worse. Thanks for all the ideas and words of support. And Ronney, I am nowhere near the sea, lol :cowboy: |
We got 2 inches! Did you get any rain?
|
Yes! We got 2 inches last night and it looks like there's more coming
|
I was happy to have gotten rain last night also 1 inch and I'm in SC - It's been very hot and dry however it's not the critical situation you all are facing.
|
Whew, finally y'all got some of that rain I was 'sending' west. Would you like some more? It's rained so much in the past few days that I had to pump some water out of the pool.
|
Send all that you can spare! Weve been praying for rain. Glad to get what we did, but we sure could use a lot more. Ive been pulling up corn stalks out of the garden and feeding them to the cows. We have a couple of round bales left over from last year but they dont seem very interested in them.
|
Yes! More rain, please :)
We got a good soak, but with these early high temps we're having we'll be dried out in no time if we don't get more. For now, I'm enjoying a break from watering the orchard and garden for a few days. |
