Fair price for this heifer

http://columbus.craigslist.org/grd/1958592190.html

What would you offer? She was born in April, so that is a photo of when she was a young calf, of course.

She isn't registered. . .

agmantoo 09/29/10 07:28 PM

If that is a heifer what is that protrusion on the navel?

LizD 09/29/10 08:01 PM

looks like a small navel hernia to me, lots of Dexters seem to have them. Are you sure she is red? Looks dun in the pic. mind you she is young. Is she registered or able to be?

Creamers 09/29/10 08:10 PM

lol - I wondered about a hernia, too. Also, she does look Dun from the photo, but I haven't inquired more about her. The sire is Reg., and the dam is not.
I'd prefer a reg. heifer, but I'm curious what a fair offer on a non. reg one would be like this one. If I could get a great deal, I might buy her anyway.
I'm looking for another heifer - I am looking at another Jersey, a reg. Dutch Belted or a Dexter. . .kind all over the place. lol.

Jcran 09/29/10 08:54 PM

That's a dun; our neighbor's cow calved one out like that in August. However, it was a bull and that "thing protruding from the navel" is called a penis. Sheesh, one would think he'd know that:gaptooth:

MO_cows 09/29/10 09:12 PM

I wouldn't offer anything until I saw a current photo or went and looked in person. She's not even a month old in the photo.

Creamers 09/29/10 09:51 PM

I don't plan to offer anything until I would see her in person. However, I just want an idea of the price for a young unreg. Dexter heifer. The reg. heifers - even a 3-4 months old - are never under $800 here.

lasergrl 09/29/10 10:48 PM

I just bought a 4 month old dun unregistered dexter heifer from Mt Hope ohio exotic auction and paid $275 She was still on her mother side so I was able to see her mother, who was stunning with a very very nice udder.

Id offer no more then $400 as I know I can get one at the auction for less.

Creamers 09/29/10 11:03 PM

I was hoping to be at $350ish, if we like her. I am really most interested in a $500 reg. Dutch Belted, but I like the small size of the Dexters and the price, but I imagine the Dutch Belted calves will sell for more later on.

My Hope, I believe, is fairly close to me, but animal auctions are hard on me - ugh. However, I wouldn't mind knowing when the next like that will be held.

lasergrl 09/29/10 11:23 PM

Nov 5 and 6 www.mthopeauction.com ;) just dont bid on anything I want.

Shouldnt be too hard on you, you can look over and touch every animal before you bid. Often you can even talk with the seller if you hang around them long enough. Being November, the prices will be rock bottom.
BTW I feel like I have seen that picture you posted before. Might not be of the actual animal.
I also like the look of the beltie calf you posted, they very frequently have belties at mt hope too but they are the beef variety. Occationally you can even find a mini jersey there.

The ad saying "Selling to retain herd bull" kind of sounds like its NOT a heifer. It sounds like a bull calf that they were planning to keep to become herd bull, but changed their mind

lasergrl 09/30/10 12:09 AM

I think they dont want a heifer bred by its sire.

MO_cows 09/30/10 07:29 AM

There aren't many Dexters around here. I did a CL search and in the last month, a yearling Dexter heifer, unregistered, was offered at $350 and a 2 1/2 yr old bull for $750.

genebo 09/30/10 11:42 AM

The bulge in the center of the belly is where the umbilical cord was attached. You can't tell the sex by that.

Lift the tail and count holes: 1 = bull, 2 = heifer

If you can't get close enough to lift the tail, watch where it pees: middle =bull, back = heifer.

Thanks all. I really want the Dutch Belted heifer, and I will probably go with her. I will still plan to make it to the Mt. Hope auction and maybe find a Dexter heifer there.

Was the pic of that earlier discussed heifer still available and did you see the navel?

good choice, they have great tasting milk.

Creamers 10/01/10 01:22 PM

this is the photo in the ad http://images.craigslist.org/3m13p33...69deeb121f.jpg
the ad says it it is a unregistered red dexter heifer for sale.

In the photo, it could be a shadow or anything, I suppose. Maybe it isn't meant to be a photo of the heifer for sale, who knows.

lasergrl 10/01/10 02:30 PM

my 4 month old has the same thing. it is just skin, and not hernia on mine at least

francismilker 10/01/10 02:37 PM

I've had several heifers that retain the "sheath" around the umbilical attachement area for a while before it shrinks. I've got some Brangus influenced cows that never lose it!

lasergrl 10/01/10 03:00 PM

Best of both worlds, too bad its a bull, and different kind of beltie

Creamers 10/01/10 10:47 PM

LOL! That is one cool looking bull

Creamers 10/02/10 10:31 AM

I actually looked back at a Jersey heifer friend of mine had and realized she has the same thing at that age.

That IS a heifer. lol.

I have little cattle experience, but I'm surprised more people didn't know this was a normal thing on heifer. . .I've looked at lots of photos of young heifer and noticed the same thing now.
