Thank you all for your kind words. We are not sure what happened. She was in labor last night and we stayed up late watching her and she didn't show much change. After a few hours of checking and watching, we decided to go to bed. I figured I'd wake up in a few hours and check again. I never woke up and by the time we got out there around 5am she was licking it and it was dead. I figure she had just had it within the hour. It was a heifer calf. She calved outside and it was very windy last night. Also it did rain at some point. We are beating ourselves up over here. Who knows if it was even born alive. It was a sad day on our farm. We had one child sobbing most of the day, but the rest of them seemed ok. It is what it is.

Please don't beat yourselves up! Calf watch is exhausting. I am willing to bet we have all slept past our desired wake up time more than once. I know I have.
What a heartbreaking loss. Prayers for quick healing hearts in your family.
