I think a person would have to start out with 300+head in my area to even get the coop to consider picking up. There isn't a dairy within 50 miles anymore and my town is kinda off the beaten highway path. Only small county highways lead to it and away from it.
As for the bucket milkers, in Oklahoma, the only folks who get to still use them are the Amish. Others must meet the strict guidelines that continue to change and advance annually. If I wanted to start out now and milk 50 head it would cost me around $100,000 to get manure facilities put in according to the inspector I visited with.
They don't allow stanchion stall barns anymore unless they meet parlor requirements and have a pipeline to get the milk to the milkroom.
