Yeap, bad to no colostrum will lead to a very weak to no immune system. Usually the bugs around a farm will take a calf in very short order when the immune system is down. Just look at the fact you will see a calf develop scours. This drags it down a little. If the conditions are right in 3 to 4 days you will notice the calf coughing and nasal discharge. Now you have a calf with pnuemonia as a primary problem with a underlying side of scours. That is why at birth if the immune system is at all comprimised the calf is dead in 3 days.

I would have to agree with Francismilker. Something called Alpha Whey Colostrum (made for humans) has saved both calves and kids here. One thing to be deficient, one thing to have NO colostrum and yet another thing to use something like Alpha Whey.

There are usually no absolutes in things like this..but again, this is just my experience and my opinion. I have used the below method and all praise to God, the animals have all had great immune systems.

I thought I should post a up date on these little guys......... They are FINE!!!! They are making me pull my hair out! I cannot for the life of me figure out what went wrong? All I have done is kept them in and they have perked up and are fine, they hop up on there own now, they are eating good, still underweight, but that will come. The weather here is nice and warm, well up to 10celc. We are having rain, but that is normal for this time of year, we had one day of snow in the beggining of Dec.

Raising calves has got to be one of the most fustrating things to do! I wish I could just leagally sell my raw milk and I would never raise another calf again
