Sorry to leave you all hanging. We lost the calf. Our vet was not able to come out, he was out of office until Thursday and he passed Wednesday night. We burned all the areas that he had been in contact as a precaution and the body.

Oh gosh, how sad. Large animal vets are so busy around here, I wonder if we'd be able to get one out ASAP if need be, but it might have been too late for the calf regardless.

I tell everyone who wants to buy from me to find a good large animal vet and butter him up all you can. Treat him like the precious resource he is. The time will come when you'll be more than glad you did.

I'm sad that you lost your calf.

Sorry to hear the news. Did you ever get a diagnosis? Was there any suspicion of Blackleg?

Good point. On other forums, I've read people bragging their vet will come out and do alot of work for $50. I suggest paying more, as there won't be many large animal vets anymore for that kind of money. They are doctors, after all.

If you're not willing to pay, then put a bullet in them and be done.

I am so sorry you lost the calf 6ncounting, when they are down like that it is really an uphill battle.

Very good advice Genebo. I once lost a goat when I couldn't find a vet on a Friday (my vet took the day off and his partners won't see food animals, only horses), I finally found a retired vet that would at least let me come and get medicine (I managed to save the goat). I talked with someone else that lost a calf and cow during a difficult birth, again couldn't find a vet to pull the calf.

We have a young new vet in town, I am super nice to him, and pay him promptly whenever he comes out, and always thank him. My daughter is at the very very start of her college career to become a large animal vet, I told her I don't care where she lives, I will be living next door!

The best advise for anyone with any kind of farm animals is to keep a basic arsenal of meds on hand. Stuff usually happens on Sunday or late at nite, when you can't get to help anyway. I have all the basic antibiotic and wound wrappings and bandages and tape and peroxide , all I might need. Keep rubber gloves and plenty of syringes and needles too. The time will come when you will need it. If you are not too familiar with animals, a good vet book will help too.
