Unless your neighbor has a registered herd of Guernsey's I would say they would cost the same as any other kind of milk cow. I personally prefer Ayrshire's (and I have milked most breeds) but unless a person has deep pockets they usually have to stick with what breed is available in their area.

BTW, there are always questions asking what kind of prices cattle are bringing. I have this site bookmarked that I find very helpful http://agebb.missouri.edu/dairy/heifers/index.htm
It is listed as a heifer info page but under the heading "Dairy Heifer Markets" you can click on links to the various stock yards that sell dairy animals. They have the most current sales prices of all dairy type animals listed.

There's a lady not too far from me that milks Herefords. She likes the milk for making cheese. She says you just have to milk more of them to get as much milk.

To each his own.

Nice site "Up North", I'm always looking for good info. I haven't seen the Ayrshire breed around here, but I've done some reading about them. Would make sense to get a cow close to home, both financially and less stress for the cow. I'm beginning to make some contact with some of the farmers around here. They like to talk, a lot. They knew about me before I even started to look around for a cow. These guys don't miss a thing.
