lol! I know all about frail looking jerseys. I've got some disease free, worm free jerseys that could eat a ton of feed a day and not gain any weight. They just simply milk off their backs.

Well, she is still here. We moved her today. We rolled her on to her raincoat and pulled into the field with the tractor. My Scotish Highlander was not happy to be kicked out of her pasture. Neither was the donkey. We got her in the shade and have rolled her a couple of times today. She adjusts herself, but I am trying to keep her blood flowing. She has her free choice mineral and all the hay she can eat. She is getting more grain, but I cut the alfalfa pellets because I am worried about bloat. She seems perkier and is coughing a little less. The vet said she had some heart failure, but she seems to be keeping that under control. She gives a try every once in a while to get up, but has not suceeded yet. My girlfriend rode across the field with the cow on the tarp. When she got off she said it was a new olympic event. Cow surfing. So it was definately a better day than yesterday. We did not cry today. That was good.

Anyone near you who could lend you a set of hip hoists?? If your tractor has a front end loader, you could clamp on those hip hoists and see about setting that cow on her feet. Sometimes just hoisting them up and letting them get their feet under them will start a down cow back on the road to recovery..
Or a sling?? A cow sling would be a good way to let her work her legs even if she can't stand yet.
Anything to get her standing for anytime at all will help her to improve.

If she's at least trying to get up, it means she hasn't given up on herself. That is a big plus. What if anything do you know about her background?

You know, Orphy, that is a death that you had nothing to do with. That cow was started down that road by the previous owner and I'm glad you gave it a good try to save that animal. Many of the big commercial operations would had it turned into hamburger by now.

I know losing livestock is hard....it is particularly hard on me to this day, and I've been doing beef cattle for 20 years. I admire those like yourself, that have the perserveance to try and save a animal.

I thank you for all your kind thoughts. I told you I was going to name her when she stood up. But she had already gotten a name. It was Fanny. She was a gentle soul and even just the short time she was here, she stole my heart. I think I will have to wait awhile before I try this again. Maybe I will be really dumb and try to milk my wilder than a cout Scothish Highlander. That will probably me of cure of cows all together. But thanks again you guys have been great. reggie

I am sure Fanny would thank you for trying your best. Hugs to both of you, and Aunt Otter too.
