No seizure that I can tell, the spit was Lilly's ... she had been licking him and licking him trying to get him up and moving. Kurt had to wrestle her away from Norman, as she refused to leave his side. She stood over him and kept trying to help.
I'm so sad....

Rest in Peace little Norman.

I am sorry for your loss, as well as Lillys.

Nitrate poisoning is often a cause of sudden death in cattle in AZ. Pigweed, Lambsquarters, Johnson grass, and other plants concentrate nitrates after a drought or frost. If any of these were in your hay, or overwintered in the pasture, it could kill a cow within just a few hours after being consumed.

Oh ----, Mycow lilly, after all this ranting and raving, now you've lost you calf. I'm so sorry, Lilly will be inconsolable for a while, she'll miss him more that you will, for sure.

Lilly will definately be very lonely for him, maybe you should try and consider getting another calf or cow to keep her company. At least, in your own good time.

And yes it always is very sad to loose a calf.

Yes, my heart is broken. And so is poor Lilly's.

I have checked the feed... they are in a corral - with no access to any other feed or grazing... they both had the same hay from the same bale... which has been in the completely inclosed barn ALL winter... from the SAME cut I've been feeding them -- fed it to the sheep, Lilly and the bunnies too... and everyone. Only thing we can think is that somehow his insides twisted... all else seemed fine.

As for moving on... Kurt (DH) ... said that we should get another calf and soon. He thinks we should get two... at least. I'm a little overwhelmed today, but I see that Lilly really needs the companionship. I don't think we'll make her wait too long, simply because my little heart is crushed.. it's not fair to her.

Thank you all for your kindness and support... I really apprecaite it all. ~Laura
