Much more common. As long as your cows are healthy, your calving problems should be very minimal. Don't let the stories scare you. 
We have had Jerseys(between 2-6 cows at any time), for about 20 years now. During that time I only needed to pull one calf. And that did not involve chains, just good arm muscles.
We had several hard calvings last fall when we bought the big dairy herd, but after getting their mineral needs started down the right path, I haven't had to pull any of the 20 or so calves since then.
If cows really had to have most calves pulled, cattle would be very scarce due to high mortality rate.
Most cows do it all by themselves.
