Good luck. I am still having fits with the cow with mastitis so I am glad to see your calf looking so much better.
We bought a Holsiein calf on the 23rd and thank goodness he is doing great.Hopefully he will keep on eating well. He is already eating alot of starter so maybe he will do ok.
Keep us updated on your calf

The second pic does look better. I think I'd be sure to keep him hydrated, for sure. Give him in between bottles of water with electrolytes in it, unless you can get him to drink from a bucket. Has he had any vaccinations?
Good luck, and keep us posted on how he's doing. Those holstein calves are pretty bony when they are born! We've been getting them from a dairy and raising them on goat's milk. Jan in Co

Hang in there and keep hoping. We had one that was down for about 2 weeks, I was ready to put him out of his misery. One day he gathered up the strength to walk again. I spent a lot of time with that calf, dealing with the poop, urine, and his front feet starting curling in and I thought for sure he'd never walk again. The massage helps too, massaging the legs and feet and moving them around. We tried a sling set up in the horse trailer but it didn't work too well. After two frustrating weeks he finally was walking again and then we had to deal with the bedsores on his underbelly, feet, and legs. Luckily it was in winter and no flies. He pulled through and grew up just fine. I couldn't believe the will to survive.

I would suggest Valbazen; that would probably be the best you could use. Actually, that is the one the vet recommended for mine, but unfortunately, it was too late.

Mudder, I don't normally worm calves until they are weaned but they are healthy calves. In this situation I would definately give a drench as this fellow is in poor health and has little to fight a worm burden with - and I can almost guarantee that he will have one.
I've thought all day about his inability to stand and have decided that he is probably a little like a downer cow. I've had cows stand on their own four feet once they have been helped up either with a sling or hip clamps but don't have the strength to get themselves up. I'm hoping that's what it is with yours and once he gets some strength into him he will manage on his own. It sounds as though he's quite capable of getting himself around once standing and that's a good sign. Does he attempt to stand?
Your doing well
Cheers,
Ronnie

ok ill try to worm him and see what happens
and yes he tires to get up but not very well he just like tried and then comes back down on his legs and thats it unless i have the bottle and he wants to drink he will do that like 4 or 5 times but if i pick up his rear and let him get his front up he wont do it he just lets his body go limp and im stuck holding up his rear while he is just laying like he is dead kinda makes me mad if he can some what run he should be able to at least get his front legs up
but i dont know i guess ill try the worming and see how that goes
also where can you but that stuff at? tcs, or some thing like that

I'm sorry about your loss. I know how that is. To me, it sounds like weak calf syndrome. This is a condition of calves born to cows who have infectious bovine diarrhea. I'm sure if you do a google search you can learn more about it. We got a calf off the neighboring dairy farm last year and it had similar symptoms to those you describe. We had the vet out who diagnosed it for us. It too ultimately died.

ill look that up well i dont know if i posted this or not but i did find out the seller has been selling sick calves and found 3 other people that he sold calves to that also died but all theres died so far only one of mine did other 1 im not sure about he has a big belly but is still small on his top line and legs and the last one is big and doing great and making me mad cause he has been head butting every thing including trying to come after me till i put him in check he still comes up to me and stuff but i will NEVER take my eye off him
so it sucks but at least i still have 2 but i have already lost enough money on the one im not gonna even break close to even on the other 2 since grain and stuff keeps going up
i was gonna keep one for meat and sell the other 2 but now i need to have all this crap tested since were getting the healty department involved and the (some thing to do with the sales of beef cattle) i forget the name i have it all wrote down at home
so if they have any thing i wont be able to even eat them or sell them id just have to start digging more holes unless its some thing that can be treated
ill keep you posted on how every thing plays out

I'm sorry to hear that, I thought he might be in with a chance given that he could stand, move about and feed himself. You did your best and can't do much more than that.
I doubt that BVD had much to do with it - calves born to mothers with this disease are normally healthy and the BVD doesn't show up until they are adults. However, going on what you have said, the cocky you bought the calves from seems a bit shady and maybe some sort of investigation is needed even although it may cost you in the process. Knowing what it's like when money is short, I'm hoping it's not going to be something major so will be watching this space.
Cheers,
Ronnie
