What breed am I?

Last week I had posted a question and stated that I would try to upload some photos to get y'alls expert advice.
I bought Red at an auction in September. There was no information on her other than she was a heifer. Well, duh!
So would anyone like to give me an idea of what breed (s) she might be?
Thanks bushels,
mamabear

looks like a jersey beef cross...

john in la 03/12/07 09:04 AM

The shape of her head; the black around the eyes and at the end of the tail all say 1/2 Jersey.
The other 1/2 could be anything but is most likely some kind of beef animal.

Do you live in a dairy area???
If so she is most likely a heifers calf that was breed to a small calf throwing bull such as a Angus.

jerzeygurl 03/12/07 09:09 AM

yes she is bred, from the looks of that bag

mamabear 03/12/07 09:40 AM

Thank y'all so much for the information. I just love jerseys, and when I saw her, I kept telling my DH, "She's got a jersey head." But since I am no cattle expert of any kind, I wasn't sure.
I am so glad to have your opinion as to whether she is bred. She has been a big girl since we got her, but the other changes have just recently started happening. I am so excited.
I am not able to get my hands on her in order to milk. Someday I hope to have a small jersey herd as they are my absolute favorites.
hugs to all,
mamabear

Jersey head for sure, balance uncertain. My opinion is the other half is from an exotic beef. Can you give a photo from the rear with both side protrusions showing? I would like to see how much she is protruding on the right side as compared to the left.

Up North 03/12/07 10:40 AM

Mamabear in the full side view note the pocket of skin on the center of her underbelly is starting to retain fluids. This may enlarge some more before she calves. Based on the tautness of her teats showing and the build up of fluid as described, I would estimate she is within 30 days of calving.
Agree with above posts as to breed. Definately half or more Jersey. The full, round rear flank, the shape of her udder and teats, the deep brisket, the muscle in neck and shoulders, and the ears are all indicators of exotic beef cross as Agman says.

mamabear 03/12/07 10:44 AM

I really appreciate the information. I will try to take a rear view this afternoon.
Yesterday, one of the younger heifers was attempting to suckle. Red allowed this for a few minutes, then butted the other one out across the pasture. :)
Sorry to sound so stupid, but what is an "exotic" beef. I know herefords, angus, etc. But not sure what an exotic beef is.

i dunno what they are thinking but i was thinking brangus, (brahma angus) she just doesnt have the shape of an angus to me the droopy brisket and the the ears reminded me of our brangus, but she hasnt a pronounced neck hump

dont know

Looks like a Jersey/Limousin cross to me.

Possibly crossed with Gelbveih or Limo. Maybe Simmental.

From the color and other looks I would say the same.

Jersey/Limousin cross which is good.

mamabear 03/12/07 12:49 PM

My DH was asking me if a beef/dairy cross was good. I told him that I believed that it would be, but glad to hear y'all saying it also.
He was afraid that I paid too much for her if she is something that nobody would want. I bought her for $800 when she was approximately 775 pounds. I have to say once more that I am no expert. I just see what I like, and I thought she was a good looking girl. Now, the fact that she was also bred makes it even better in my mind.

For consideration by the other experts here, has anyone seen a Jersey/Tarentaise cross? That is what my guess would be.

Yldrosie 03/12/07 01:37 PM

I vote part red brangus too.

Beef Dairy cross is done alot, mostly with Holstien and ANgus but Jerzy with a good beef would be just as good,

if you could gentel her a bit you could probably milk her, we had some Holstine/Angus cows for a while that had HUGE udders and raised GREAT calfs when bred back to Angus.

JeffNY 03/12/07 02:08 PM

Jersey/Red angus? Seeing how the coloration isn't dark, red angus aren't dark either. When you cross any herefords with jerseys, you tend to get a fairly beefy look. Angus are beefy, but the key is, who was the sire, who was the dam? If the dam was beefy, sire was jersey, it will tend to take on more of a dairy look. If the dam was dairy, sire beefy, then a beefy trait. I had a white face hereford come from a 100% registered Jersey, he grew horns like a Jersey. But he looked like a white faced hereford, from top to bottom. At about 3-4 years, he weighed 1650 at the market.

He threw good calves too, all beefy calves. One of the cows stands uphill like a dairy animal. But other than that, they are all hereford looking.

I've got a Jersey\Limousie cross that could pose as her twin.

~Tomboy~ 03/12/07 02:44 PM

My guess would be part limo. But definately not a limo head.

myersfarm 03/12/07 03:24 PM

what does that do? I was told that the bigger the more milk they will have. She has to be atlest 50% Jersy. Look at her neck. (im not up on Jersys but) The normal holstien doesn't have that much neck skin before the legs. So she has to be 50% Beef. Very nice udder! The beef does a good good at keeping it high!

My uncle and aunt has a farm, and bred a cow with a 1/4 beef and 3/4 dairy bull. Well that calf (now a milker) has been milk since 2001 and was born 1999. She has the huge dairy udder but is held so high at 8 years old. She must have broken a record for a cow staying that long! (they don't put up with cows that don't get preg atfer the 2 try. In the spring they have hefiers coming in every week! So they don't need to many older cows with low udders.) :p

jerzeygurl 03/12/07 10:05 PM

currently milking a jersey angus cross, carries bag high but has lots of milk... first time freshner

She appears barren from this view! ; )

Thanks for the edit! Now that we have the pic she does not appear to me to be a far along as I earlier thought. I expected the right side to protrude more.

mamabear 03/13/07 11:01 AM

Sorry for the poopy picture. I didn't notice it until I uploaded it.

Your Hoof Question ...

Judging by your recent photos, No, She does not require hoof trimming.
On the dry ground of summer months, her walking will wear them down sufficiently......Cheers.

mamabear 04/09/07 07:51 AM

Hi Up North,
I think that must have been someone elses post. I didn't ask about hooves, but thanks for the information anyway.

Such a sweet Jersey face she has. Has she calved?

mamabear 04/09/07 08:07 AM

Hi susieM,
Yes she has! Our baby pics are posted here as well. She is such an excellent mama.

There I got mamabear mixed up with mamahen!
Gettin' words mixed up reminds me of the Dyslexic Agnostic. He went off to sit on the Mountain for solitude & reflection. For three days, he kept repeating "There is a Dog, There is a Dog.".....

mamabear 04/09/07 09:25 AM

:rotfl:

Whew! That could be a bad combination mixing a mamabear with a mama hen. Then the saying would be "Madder than a ol' wet bear"?

Hope you have a great day, Up North!

mamabear

SusieM,
I'm sure that you've found the pics by now, but I actually meant that I had posted them on another thread rather than on this one. It is Monday, huh?
