At our ages, the relatives are used to our odd ways of finding enjoyment. Our children were raised with the animals, so they and our grandchildren are fine with it all. I have an online blog in which I post pictures and videos of my dogs, horses, and my newly acquired Jersey heifer, and it seems everybody loves it. I've had dozens of my readers say they envy me. So, I may be weird... but lots of people want to live like I do (they wouldn't if they saw my crummy house on the inside).

I'm called the goat lady or chicken lady or pig lady, what have you. Everyone thinks my elevator doesn't go up to the top floor. But they love my ham, fresh eggs and cabrito. Kinda like the children story "The Red Hen" I think it's called......anyway, everyone loves to kid around about how nutty we are until harvest time.

You bet they do! DH retired at 55 and I was 57, and bought this land on which to build our retreat-home while living near Denver. By the time I was 59.5, I had acquired my 3/4 Guernsey heifer, not knowing what to think might happen to the trucking industry as an outcome of 9/11/01. [DH has no interest in cattle; I see to all the work, with Grandson's help.] Heck, we had bought part of a hayfield. How many ex-suburbanites do THAT sort of thing?
But my earliest years were spent in upstate NY where I was born, and my father's folks were Vermont farmers and dairymen...I fell off my first horse by age 4.
In my travels around the country all these years, cattle have always, but always, turned my head, and I love my beef and milk, and never want to be out of a good source of either. Right now, I cannot get the latter, unless I want goat.
We are happier here than ever, even with winters as cold as they are. There's only one stoplight in the whole county. Sure, we have to travel on ice and snow, up and down curvy roads...better than dealing with the L.A. freeways we grew up on. Neither of us would trade what we have here for that, any of it! We go into Lewiston-Clarkston once a month to stock up on what things we can't get here.
We don't know where this country's headed to,
and our ready-made food's practically poisonous, so I try to stay away from it.

It will be a few years before I can have any cows, but I dream of doing that day. I can't think of a better place to get your freshest milk ever, and homemade butter.
This is at the end of my list of want to do before I die things and yes, they think I am nut.
Whatever. Wonder what they will think when this world finishes falling apart and they are hungry? Yes, I will share, but I will RUB IT IN, lol.
Forget them and carry on your dreams. They are better than any dream they have, I'll bet. I also believe the Good Lord believes that too. IMHO
God Bless

My Family think it is "cute" that we live this way until I get a call that a Grandchild is in a summer play in the city or a recital or something and I can't just drop everything and go there because, like now, I have a goat due to kid at any moment and can't leave right now.(three hours away)
I do see a lot of the Grandchildrens programs. just not all of them. I wish they would come to the farm more. They used to, till the novelty wore off.

I suppose they do, but after all these years they know better than to waste the breath!
They sure don't mind buying a half a beef or a pig though.....

yep crazy! in fact I need not exaggerate in order to say friends and family not longer associate with me, because of this homesteading. They are embarrassed. Even local big farmers hate to bother with me. I have a hard time even buying hay in less than a semi-trailer.
My DD (age 14) and I (53)bought 18 acres three years ago. It is tough but there is no place in the world I would rather be!
I am glad to come to this site it makes me feel better about myself!
