we always kept the bobbie calve in a pen, let them out to finish off the mamma when i had gotten what i needed, while she was still happily munching away and confined by the head gate, other wise many cows will just butt them away. You will ocassionally get the one that will take anything.
last milking season i milked in the mornings let the calves free to run with mammas and then put them up at night so i could milk in the mornings. That way i only had to milk once a day, and could go on vacation by just leaving the calves free,
this time the one im milking lost her baby(suspect horses as i caught them in the act with another) so i have to milk her or find a milk sitter which is a pain.
this year when baseball starts i plan on moving to a 9 am to 9 pm schedule, should work good in the summer time to avoid the main heat.
