I'm logged in and getting some words in people's posts that are text advertising links. Do I have a bug or is this something new here on HT? I don't see banners anymore so I'm guessing it's a change in ad format.

I've heard this mentioned on other sites, and it isn't the site that's doing it. It is being done at the user system end of the connection, not at site central. It's add-ons to your browser. They get paid for doing this to you. If you've updated your browser, or any of the add-ons to it, go through one product at a time, un-installing them, until the bad things go away. The last thing you un-installed was the thing doing evil unto you.

I figured it out. In my case it was adware/malware called coupon companion. It's looking like I got it with a small freeware program I downloaded from (download cnet). Used to be a trustworthy place to download from and still hosts a lot of downloads for the big names but I guess you have to watch the small stuff.

It does also attach to add ons as wooglebug said but wasn't the case for me.

I finally ended up doing a restore on my laptop. I'd been wanting to do it anyway. I bought it used and it was a bit slow so it needed to be cleaned up. There's some guys on Malwarebytes that can walk you through fixing it. FYI

Me too. And I'm too computer illiterate to know what to do about it. It's very annoying. I don't think it's limited to HT though.
